Learning to DJ (w/ the 3345 Team)
Starting to mix : finding cue points : periods
On-top of your ‘bar’ structure which represents
the second shortest repetition of a complete sound (usually
the bass), you will also have a repetition of the general sound
spectrum with a 32 beat ‘period’.
On average dance tracks have 3-4 periods at the beginning,
about 4-6 periods in the middle and another 3-4 at the end,
with each period representing 32 beats or 8 ‘bars’.
The end of each period usually represents a change in tonality
either up (start of track) or down (end of track). If you can
learn to identify periods in a track, then you never have to
worry about counting beats or even memorizing time cues.
Start again with a simple track like:
- Stonebridge – put em’ high (junior jack mix)
Listen to the track and identify ‘periods’ at
first by counting, then by identifying the time length of periods
(e.g. 120BPM = 1beat/0.5s, so 32 beats in 16s). Eventually
after much experience you will feel the ‘periods’ and
you will know the number by just listening.
Now that you understand more about ‘bars’ and ‘periods’,
lets get into cue finding, for fine mixing.
