Learning to DJ (w/ the 3345 Team)

Starting to mix : finding cue points : beats

A beat is the shortest repetition in dance music and is the most helpful piece of information when synchronizing tracks. Beats are usually regular in a 4/4 structure. Dance music such as House, Progressive and Trance tends to have regular beats. Sometimes however, some tracks are created in breakbeat-style, which simply means that the beats are not sounding at equal timings, but rather, in a pre-determined pattern that still tends to repeat itself every 4 beats.

For example a 3/4 breakbeat would simply mean, that every 'bar' (4 beats) only 3 of these sound and they can be arranged randomly. E.g. beat 1 sounds, then a 1 beat break, then beats 2 & 3 sound on the 3rd beat and beat 4 is a break. Patterns vary widely, so don't take this as anything but a simple example.
