Learning to DJ (w/ the 3345 Team)
Starting to mix : finding cue points : bars
In dance music, the beats are organized in a 4/4 structure
for regular beats, which is also known as a ‘bar’.
When you listen to tracks you have to listen for the 4 beat
repetitions, and identify where they start. Each ‘bar’ represents
a complete sound wave or general repetition of the sound.
The best way to identify these ‘bars’ is to take
a track such as:
- Stonebridge – put em’ high (junior jack mix)
On this track, listen for the bass (not the beat) and follow
every how many beats it repeats. The bass for this particular
song starts early around the 30 second mark, so listen up,
feel the bass wave come in and out and count the beats that
go along with it. This is the best way of understanding the ‘bar’.
Almost 99% of the time you will also find that tracks have
pads and crash-beats happening on the 1 st beat of a ‘bar’,
which also keeps the sound regular.
If you’ve listened to pro-DJs in the mix, you will have
noticed that pads, crash-beats and even vocals of two tracks
will occur in sync. This is because their ‘bars’ line
up.
