Equipment : the mixer

An audio mixer is an aggregation of faders that allow you to fade sound from one channel to another. A DJ mixer generally comes with volume faders for each individual channel as well as a crossover fader, which allows you to fade between channels. Every DJ mixer should also have gain controls on each channel, in order to cut bright sound sources or boost quite ones. In addition a headphone cue button must be present for each channel. This will allow you to monitor any channel through your headphones by the push of a button, without interfering with the live mix (what is coming out of the speakers).

Depending on budgets mixers can vary substantially in features and quality. Midrange product we would recommend would include Numark 3 or 4 channel mixers and if money and dedication permits even a Pioneer DJM500.

On the same token you can also get a lower range mixer from Behringer such as a DJX-700, which will mimic closely the Pioneer brand at a fraction of the cost and will give excellent sound output in home-environments.
