CD-players
Static jog-dial type:
For DJing purposes there are two types of CD players. The
first, which is also the oldest, is the static platter type,
which features an idle jog-dial that can be used to nudge forward
or nudge beak-wards. Clearly, this system offers less control.
The jog dial tends to be small and it is simply impossible
to properly scale its response, especially when crossing to
or from a real turntable.
Dynamic jog-dial type:
Dynamic platter systems, try to emulate a real turntable
by implementing larger diameter jog-dials, sometimes as big
as a real 12” record, that turn with the music. The user
can nudge, break and generally do most tricks such as scratch
and reverse. The closest is the Numark CDX, which actually
emulates both the response and the feel of the Vinyl Record.
While being good overall, CD players never posses the sensitivity
inherent in the structure of a real turntable. Often as the
case may be, a dynamic platter will not feel the gentler touches
of your finger, and will simply ignore the resistance, without
giving a change in output.
